Regeneration By Light

This development of town centre lighting aims to encourage visitors to explore the town centre and provide additional trading opportunities to the local business community.
Phase I incorporates a welcoming beacon at the top of Blackpool Tower along with architectural lighting outside of the town hall. Phase II consists of an exciting all year round illuminations spectacle within the town centre, culminating in a centrepiece sound and light show in Birley Street.
St John's Precinct
The improvements include the creation of a pedestrianised piazza along with new planting, paving and lighting to attract and enhance the character, appearance and atmosphere of the area.

The Houndshill Shopping Centre has increased available retail space and in turn attracted considerable investment which is essential to provide a quality shopping experience.
The redevelopment of the Houndshill Shopping Centre has brought a threefold increase in shopping floor-space which was previously occupied by the shopping mall. It has also provided a 3 storey Debenhams along with an array of popular highstreet stores such as H&M, Next, River Island, Primark and Faith.

The former Central Station site is at the centre of Blackpool’s ambition to develop an exciting and unique destination with a sustainable, year round economy.
This historically important site now stands ready to progress a major mixed-use leisure development. Substantial activity is now underway to source suitable developments.
Blackpool & The Fylde HE Campus
This expanded and modernized campus, based at the existing Palatine site, offers new teaching and learning provision. It aims to provide the improvement of skills to the local area.

The ‘Seafront Experience’ is a regeneration programme consisting of several inter-related schemes which collectively seek to enhance the visitor potential with a unique seafront environment. These schemes include;
Coastal Protection
Start Date: 2005

This project centres on the reconstruction of damaged sea defences. The sea wall is being replaced and 6 new headlands created, each extending 60 meters seaward. A series of 'Spanish steps' leading down to the sea will complete this protection programme and increase public access to the seafront.
Tram Track Renewal

Funding Partners: Department for Transport, Blackpool Council, Lancashire County Council
Emergency tram track works were undertaken to ensure the tram way continues to run smoothly in the short term before more detailed development begins.
A further £85m of funding has recently been awarded, allowing further improvements to the Blackpool to Fleetwood line, including new state-of-the-art trams and refurbished tram-stops. For further information on this scheme click here.
Tower Festival Headland

This headland is situated opposite Blackpool’s famous tower and will house a spectacular open-air events space for up to 20,000 spectators. A new art installation entitled the ‘Comedy Carpet’ featuring comedy catchphrases etched in stone will provide a creative footpath stretching from the entrance of the tower onto the festival headland itself. A brand new Tourist Information Centre, cutting-edge wedding venue and beach café/restaurant will also be based here.

Waterloo/St Chads Headland

These two adjoining headlands will incorporate an "all ages" adventure play area and beach sport spaces capable of holding events such as volleyball, football and cricket. Toilet and refreshment facilities will be housed in a simple building.

Central Corridor Phase 2 covers the area north of Bloomfield Road adjacent to Blackpool Football Stadium. The works along this main entrance point to the town follows on from the success along Central Corridor Phase 1 (George Bancroft Park).

To improve the Blackpool arrival experience, this project aims to transform the existing sea of tarmac into a high quality attractive entrance point for visitors and a welcome green space for it's residents and communities.
In May 2006 Laurence Llewelyn Bowen opened this £13.5m facility - Blackpool’s newest park and a brand new entrance into the resort. This public realm project includes 650 parking spaces, a children’s play area, a multi-use games area, a bouldering wall and two 20 metre high climbing towers.

The third phase of the Central Corridor programme lies to the south of George Bancroft Park from Waterloo Road bridge. This includes the Yeadon Way approach road and roundabout, the large car park areas to the south and the railway lands which separate this from the South Beach area.
This project will look at landscaping and remodelling, improving car parks, transport flow and access to some of Blackpool's major attractions.

This newly transformed area of the promenade has revitalised the southern entry point into Blackpool, and extended the seaside experience for visitors and residents alike.
Restored walkways are complemented by works of public art, including the world’s largest mirror ball and a modern lighting scheme. This stretch of the Promenade is now used frequently by pedestrians and cyclists seeking to enjoy the fantastic views over the Irish sea.
The innovative swivelling wind shelters that have recently been awarded a National Civic Trust Award, are also not to be missed as part of The Great Promenade Show.
